Academic Library Use of Amazon

SUMMARY OF MAIN FINDINGS
Purchases of Microfilm Scanner or Readers from Amazon
We asked: to the best of your knowledge has your library purchased any of the following
from Amazon over the past five years? First we asked about microfilm scanners or readers.
Only 2.94% of survey participants had purchased a microfilm scanner or reader through
Amazon over the past five years. Purchasers were all public colleges with enrollment of
greater than 5,000,

Purchases of Microfilm Supplies from Amazon
For microfilm supplies only 1.47% had made a purchase through Amazon over the past five
years.

Purchases of Archival Supplies from Amazon
We also asked about archival supplies and aids.
29.41% of libraries surveyed had purchased archival boxes, files, tissue, boards, slides,
albums or other similar archival tools over the past five years. Nearly 35% of private
college libraries had done so vs. only 20% of public colleges. In general, the higher the
tuition charged by the college, the greater the propensity to purchase these items from
Amazon.

Purchases from Amazon of Tapes, Glues, Velcro and other Fasteners & Binding Agents
35.29% of libraries surveyed had purchased tapes, glues, Velcro and other fasteners and
binding agents from Amazon over the past five years. Community colleges were the most
likely to purchase these items from Amazon, half had done so, while research universities
were the least likely, only 20% had done so.

Library Total Spending on eBooks Accounted for by Amazon
We asked: What percentage of the library’s total spending for eBooks was accounted for by
purchases from Amazon?
The percentage was very low, less than 1%, a mean of 0.43%. Almost all use was by
research-oriented universities but even for research universities, Amazon accounted for
only 1.22% of total eBook spending.

21 | P a g e

Academic Library Use of Amazon

Library Overall Spending on eBooks from all Suppliers
The libraries in the sample spent a mean of $119,924 on eBooks in the past year; Amazon’s
share of this is slight, a mean of only approximately $516. For research universities, the
spending is greater, a mean of 1.22% of total eBook spending, or 1.22% of a $588,565, or
about $7,180 annually per research library in the sample.

Library Overall Spending on Audiobooks
We asked: How much did the library spend on audiobooks in the past year? The mean was
only $556. Most spending was by public colleges; the mean for public colleges was $1,243
while for private colleges it was only $153.66. Research universities spent by far the most,
a mean of $1,467.

Audiobook Spending Accounted for by Purchases through Amazon
Amazon accounted for a mean of 8% of audiobooks purchases.

Purchases of Library Shelving Through Amazon
We asked: has your library purchased library shelving or furniture through Amazon in the
past year?
Only 4.41% had done so.

Purchases of Videos through Amazon
We asked: has your library purchased videos through Amazon in the past year?
76.47% had done so; 81.4% of private colleges, 68% of public ones. For colleges charging
more than $30,000 per year in tuition, more than 88% had purchased videos from Amazon
in the past year.

Purchases of Computer and Printer Supplies through Amazon
We asked: Has your library purchased computer or printer supplies through Amazon in the
past year?
Close to 31% had done so; the smaller the library staff, the more likely that they were to
have purchased such supplies from Amazon the past year. For libraries with less than 10
FTE employees, 38.1% had purchased computer or printer supplies from Amazon in the
past year, a figure that dropped to 33.33% for libraries with between 10 and 30 employees
and then to 21.74% for those with more than 30 employees. Once again, oddly perhaps,
private colleges were much more likely than public ones to purchase from Amazon;
37,21% of the former but only 20% of the latter had purchased computer or printer
22 | P a g e

Academic Library Use of Amazon
supplies from Amazon in the past year. Also, the lower the enrollment, the greater the
tendency to purchase these supplies from Amazon; 38.46% of colleges in the sample with
fewer than 2,000 students had purchased computer or printer supplies through Amazon in
the past year vs. a shade more than 26% of all other libraries.

Purchases of Tablets, Laptops, Desktops and other Computing Devices through
Amazon
We asked: Has your library purchased tablets, laptops, desktops of other computing
devices through Amazon in the past year?
Only 8.82% had done so. It was nearly twice as common among public than private
colleges, 12% vs. 7%, and was most common among the largest colleges with the lowest
tuition.

Purchases of Software through Amazon
We asked: Has your library purchased software through Amazon in the past year?
Only 1.47% had done so.

Purchases of Online Courses through Amazon
We asked: Has your library purchased online courses through Amazon in the past year?
None had done so.

Purchases of CD’s/vinyl or other Music Mediums through Amazon
We asked: Has your library purchased CD/vinyl or other music medium through Amazon in
the past year?
Nearly 28% had made such a purchase in the past year. The larger the library (in terms of
FTE employees) the greater the percentage of buyers. Only 9.52% of those with fewer than
10 employees were buyers vs 33.33% of those with from 10-30 employees and 39.13% of
those with more than 30. Nearly twice as many public as private colleges were buyers;
40% vs, 20.93%.

Purchases of Wireless Access Equipment Through Amazon
We asked: Has your library purchased wireless access equipment through Amazon in the
past year?
Only 5.88% had done so. Community colleges and colleges with low enrollment accounted
for most purchases.
23 | P a g e

Academic Library Use of Amazon

Purchases of Mobile Computing Recharging Terminal, Nodes or other Means from
Amazon
We asked: Has your library purchased mobile computing recharging terminals, nodes or
other means through Amazon in the past year?
17.65% of survey respondents had purchased mobile computing recharging terminals,
nodes or other means through Amazon in the past year. Almost all purchasing of this kind
was done by private colleges of which 23.26% had done so vs. only 4% of public colleges.

AMAZON’S ROLE IN ACADEMIC LIBRARY PRINT BOOKS PURCHASING
Library Total Spending on Print Books
We asked: What was the library’s approximate total spending on print books in the 201718 academic or fiscal year?
The mean was $249,434. For community colleges it was only $20,723 while for research
universities it was $1.66 million. For the 4-year and MA/PHD granting institutions in the
sample it was $48,266 and $52,283 respectively. For the 2018-19 academic year, spending
on print books rose to a mean of $264,685, or by $15, 251, a mean increase of 6.11%,
suggesting that the decline of print books, a market impacted significantly by eBooks in
recent years, has abated, as licensing and access issues, as well as high prices, plague the
eBook market, perhaps rekindling interest in print.
We asked what percentage of print book purchases were accounted for by a broad range of
suppliers, seeking specific data for each supplier. The suppliers mentioned in the question
were: Eastern Book Company, Midwest Library Services, Gobi Library Services,
ProQuest/Coutts/Ingram, Amazon, Barnes & Noble, and all other suppliers.

Mean Percentage of Print Book Purchases Accounted for by Eastern Book Company
Eastern Book Company accounted for a mean of 2.07% of the print book purchases in the
past year by the libraries sampled. All Eastern sales were accounted for by private colleges
in the sample, for whom the company accounted for 3.22% of total purchases. Almost all
purchases were by medium sized colleges in the 2,000 to 5,000 enrollment range and all
were in the highest tuition rage of greater than $30,000 annually.

Mean Percentage of Print Book Purchases Accounted for by Midwest Library Services
Midwest Library Services accounted for 6.01% of total book purchases by the
organizations sampled. It was strongest among public colleges for which it accounted for
10.1% of total print book purchases vs. 3.74% for private colleges. For the community
colleges in the sample Midwest accounted for 19.5% of sales; for the 4-Year colleges,
8.57%.

Academic Library Use of Amazon

Mean Percentage of Print Book Purchases Accounted for by Gobi Library Services
Gobi Library Services accounted for 26.89% of the print book purchases of the libraries
sampled. It was strongest among research university libraries for which it accounted for
44.17% of total print book acquisitions.

Mean Percentage of Print Book Purchases Accounted for by ProQuest/Coutts/Ingram
ProQuest/Coutts/Ingram accounted for 5.55% of the print book purchases for the libraries
sampled. For research universities, ProQuest/Coutts/Ingram accounted for a mean of
14.86% of their print book purchases.

Mean Percentage of Print Book Purchases Accounted for by Amazon
Amazon accounted for 46.93% of the print book purchases for the libraries sampled.
Amazon was strongest among smaller libraries, those with fewer than 10 employees; it
accounted for a mean of nearly 74% of the print book purchases of these libraries. Amazon
was also very strong among private college libraries for whom it accounted for a mean of
54.18% of print book acquisitions. Among research universities – which account for as
much as two thirds of the overall academic print book market – Amazon is much weaker –
accounting for a mean of 23.33% of the dollar volume of purchase for the libraries sampled.
Since Amazon is weakest in one of the largest markets – the research library market – its
total share of the dollar volume of the academic library print book market is likely to be
much less than 47% (the mean figure of Amazon’s share of purchases for all academic
libraries sampled) but more likely closer to about 30%.

Mean Percentage of Print Book Purchases Accounted for by Barnes & Noble
Barnes & Noble accounted for 1.32% of the print book purchase dollar volume for the
libraries sampled; it was strongest predominantly among smaller libraries. For libraries
with fewer than 10 employees it accounted for 1.89% of print book purchases. Almost all
of its sales were to private rather than public colleges, for the former, it accounted for
1.97% of purchases, for the latter, only 0.21%.

Mean Percentage of Print Book Purchases Accounted for by All Other Sources,
Including Direct from Publisher
All other sources accounted for a mean of 15.1% of total purchases, including sales direct
from publishers. Much of this category appears to be sales direct from publishers or
through the college bookstore (which are themselves mostly going through a major book
distributor); however, some other sources were also mentioned. They were: Rittenhouse,
Casalini Libri, Hein, Emery-Pratt, Abebooks, Alibris, Harassowitz, and Mathews Medical
Books.
