INTRODUCTION
1. Rationale
Ho Chi Minh’s Thought is the ideological foundation of our Party and the great
spiritual property of our people, guiding the struggle of our people to go to victory.
Promoting learning, applying and following his thoughts is an extremely important
and meaningful work for the Vietnamese revolution in the period of accelerating the
national industrialization, modernization and integration getting deeper and deeper.
Patriotism runs like a red thread throughout history, is a noble spiritual product,
holding the highest standard for morality and leading the ladder of cultural and
spiritual values of the Vietnamese nation. Patriotism acts as a great endogenous
motivation of the Vietnamese ethnic community, creating the unrivaled power in the
resistance wars against foreign aggression and in the cause of building the country.
Young people are the mainstay of the country, are the future owners of the
country, are the pioneering force in building and defending the Fatherland, which are
one of the factors determining the success or failure of the Vietnamese revolution.
Taking care, fostering and educating young people are really important and necessary
in order to ensure the stability and sustainable development of the country.
Nowadays, we are striving to build a Vietnam which is peaceful, rich,
independent, democratic and going up to socialism. This is a great and glorious career
but really arduous, complex and unprecedented. For the purpose of accomplishing
this career, one of the most important motivations is to promote learning, following
Ho Chi Minh’s Thought, arousing and highly promoting patriotism in the Party, in all
strata of the population, especially young generations who will be successors,
continuing to raise the flag of national independence associated with socialism to go
to the final victory.
Applying Ho Chi Minh’s Thought in the work of educating patriotism to young
people is a significant part of the ideological work of our Party. Over the past years,
this work has achieved encouraging results, for instance, the party committees led the
political system and the whole society to better perform the work of educating

patriotism to young people; the quality of the cadres who were directly involved in
educational tasks was constantly improved; educational programs, contents and
methods were regularly innovated; material conditions for education were interested in
investing and improving, etc. Nevertheless, in addition to these positive ones, the
patriotism education for young people on the basis of applying Ho Chi Minh’s Thought
has limited in awareness; the quality of the team directly working on educational tasks
was weak and lacking, educational contents and methods remained inadeqate, a part of
young people also showed signs of deteriorating politcal thought, morality and
lifestyle, ...
The above-mentioned limitations and shortcomings are due to many reasons, of
which a very basic one is the lack of a thorough and comprehensive study on the
values of Ho Chi Minh’s Thought so that they would be applied in accordance with
the current situation.
From the reality of patriotism education for Vietnamese youth on the basis of
applying Ho Chi Minh’s Thought and the significance of this work to the development
of the country, the topic “Applying Ho Chi Minh’s Thought in the work of educating
patriotism to Vietnamese youth today” was selected for the doctoral thesis title in
Political studies, majoring in Ideological work.
2. Research aims and objectives of the Thesis
2.1. Research aims
On the basis of clarifying the issues of theory, analysis and assessment of the
situation and the thesis recommend perspectives and solutions to enhance the application
of Ho Chi Minh’s Thought in the work of educating patriotism to Vietnamese youth today.
2.2. Research objectives
- To point out the issues that have been or have not been studied and should be
further studied.
- To clarify concepts of tools, contents and methods, and the need to apply Ho
Chi Minh’s Thought in the work of educating patriotism to young people.
- To analyze basic impact factors; clarify achievements and limitations in
performing the contents and methods of patriotism education for young people

associated with the application of Ho Chi Minh’s Thought and its causes; the
questions posed.
- To recommend perspectives and solutions that would enhance the application
of Ho Chi Minh’s Thought in the work of educating patriotism to young people.
3. Object and scope of the study
3.1. Object of the study
Applying Ho Chi Minh’s Thought in the work of educating patriotism to
Vietnamese youth today.
3.2. Scope of the study
- For scientific content:
+ Ho Chi Minh’s patriotism and Ho Chi Minh’s Thought on youth education
should be applied to defining contents and methods of educating partriotism to young
people.
- For subjects: focusing on surveying rural youth, youth workers, young
people and students.
- For space: The Thesis should survey the application of Ho Chi Minh’s
Thought in the work of educating patriotism to Vietnamese youth in 9 provinces and
cities, including Bac Ninh, Hanoi, Nam Dinh, Nghe An, Nha Trang, Dak Lak, Ba
Ria-Vung Tau and Soc Trang.
- For time: From 2008 up to now.
4. Theoretical basis and research approaches
4.1. Theoretical basis: Theory of Marxism and Leninism, Ho Chi Minh’s
Thought, guidelines of the Party, policies, laws of the State with reference to youth
education.
4.2. Research approaches
- Methodology: Dialectical materialism and historical materialism.
- Research methods: deduction and induction, analysis and synthesis, history
anad logic, comparison, statistics, sociological investigation, etc.
5. New scientific contributions of the Thesis
- Giving a new definition of applying Ho Chi Minh’s Thought in the work of
educating patriotism to Vietnamese youth today.

- Provided the content of patriotism education for young people associated with
the application of Ho Chi Minh’s Thought.
- Pointing out the contradictions of the reality of applying Ho Chi Minh’s
Thought to patriotism education for Vietnamese youth.
- Recommending the perspectives and solutions that would enhance the
application of Ho Chi Minh’s Thought in the work of educating patriotism to
Vietnamese youth in the coming time.
6. Theoretical and practical significance of the Thesis
6.1. Theoretical significance
- The Thesis acts as a theoretical basis for the work of educating patriotism to
Vietnamese youth in the coming time.
- Making contributions assert the fundamental role of Ho Chi Minh’s Thought
in the spiritual life of society.
6.2. Practical significance
- Contributing to strengthening the education of patriotism for young people
and the struggle in the field of ideology and culture.
- Acting as a reference for the study, teaching of Ho Chi Minh’s Thought and
the work of educating patriotism to young people.
7. Structure of the Thesis
In addition to introduction, literature review, conclusion, references and
appendices, the Thesis consists of 3 chapters, 8 paragraphs.

generation by Nghiem Dinh Vy; etc.
III.2. Solutions for youth education following Ho Chi Minh’s Thought
The topic “Methodology of educating Ho Chi Minh’s Thought to young
people” chaired by Pham Hong Chuong; The book “Ho Chi Minh’s Thought on
revolutionary ideal education for young people and its application in current
revolutionary practice chaired by Tran Van Hai; the book “Training young
generations of the people into brave, intelligent and creative revolutionary soldiers”
of Pham Van Dong; Culture in the youth’s personality co-authored by Do Huy and
Mai Hai Anh; Educating moral consciousness to Vietnamese youth today of Vo Minh
Tuan; Youth – education and development of Duong Tu Dam; Educating and
cultivating the current youth following Ho Chi Minh’s Thought of Le Trong Tuyen,
etc.
IV. Values of the research works that should be consulted and the issues
need further clarification
IV.1. Values of the research works that should be consulted
It can be said that a rich amount of knowledge with many elaborate studies on
the application of Ho Chi Minh’s Thought in the education for youth in general and
the education of patriotism for young generation in particular have showed the
attractiveness or the special importance of this issue for the national development.
The scientific value of a large volume of materials, theoretical and practical studies
on ideological work of the Party, on the application of Ho Chi Minh’ Thought in the
education of patriotism for youth, on the quality of that work, etc is a favorable
condition for the author to carry out the Thesis.

The literature review indicates that foreign and national scientific works have
made significant contributions both in theory and practice through interpreting some
of the following basic issues.
Firstly, the above-mentioned projects from various approaches and methodologies,
authors sought to analyze, clarify some concepts such as patriotism, youth, education
methodology, effective application.
Secondly, at another level, several works mentioned the necessity of applying
Ho Chi Minh’s Thought in the education of patriotism for Vietnamese youth.
Thirdly, some works analyzed in depth the characteristics of young people, the
situation of applying Ho Chi Minh’s Thought in youth education, clarifying the
necessity to strengthen the education for youth in general and the education of
patriotism for youth in particular, especially the application of his thoughts in the
education of patriotism for the young generation in the context of globalization and
international integration today.
With the achieved results, the above scientific works act as valuable references
for the PhD student to perform the thesis topic “Applying Ho Chi Minh’s Thought in
the work of educating patriotism for Vietnamese youth today.
IV.2. The issues need further clarification
In general, the above research works achieved a number of results with
reference value as stated, but because of the approach at different angles, many issues
related to the thesis have not been mentioned by authors and scientists, which can be
raised as the following.
Firstly, the theoretical basis of applying Ho Chi Minh’s Thought in the
education of patriotism for young people has not been mentioned.
Secondly, the reality of applying Ho Chi Minh’s Thought in the education of
patriotism for Vietnamese youth today throughout the country has not been
mentioned.
Thirdly, the perspectives and solutions to enhance the application of Ho Chi
Minh’s Thought in the education of patriotism for Vietnamese youth in the coming
time have not been mentioned.

With reference to the purpose and tasks of the Thesis, the author inherited
selective achievements and findings that previous researchers achieved and should
continue to deal with some of the following issues.
Firstly, it is required to further clarify concepts of applying Ho Chi Minh’s
Thought in the work of educating patriotism to Vietnamese youth, content and
method of educating patriotism to young people associated with the application of Ho
Chi Minh’s Thought; clarifying the necessity of applying Ho Chi Minh’s Thought in
the education of patriotism for young people and principles of application.
Secondly, the reality of applying Ho Chi Minh’s Thought in the work of
educating patriotism to Vietnamese youth should be studied to define the impact
factors; it should pose the questions to be addressed.
Thirdly, it is required to recommend the perspectives and solutions that would
enhance the application of Ho Chi Minh’s Thought in the education of patriotism for
young people.
In general, the above-mentioned research works have made significant
contributions to the study in a focused way towards the application of Ho Chi Minh’s
Thought in the education of patriotism for young people. However, because of
approach and purpose of the study, no comprehensive project has been found to fully
solve this problem. Even the theoretical issue of the education of patriotism for young
people still has many different perspectives, no one has completely mentioned or
given a system of rigorous theoretical basis. Most of the authors only mentioned the
areas of study that needed to innovate and analyze them by the practice in the field or
industry they were working. Topics and research works had various approaches and
perspectives, when the work of educating patriotism to young people was taken as a
research object from moral education, revolutionary ideal education, patriotism
education, cultural education, etc.
The research works related to the application of Ho Chi Minh’s Thought in the
work of educating patriotism to Vietnamese youth all showed great values of Ho Chi
Minh’s Thought and patriotism education for the young generation; at the same time
it was pointed out that the patriotism of youth was only formed and developed in the

process of social activities, in the multidimensional relationship among individuals,
families, schools and society. Thus, young people from birth to adulthood always
have a relationship with the surrounding environment that formed patriotism. In other
words, the patriotism of youth may be dynamic, changing gradually over time. If this
change turns positive, young people will love the Fatherland much more and vice
versa, etc.
So far there has not been any scientific work to systematically and fully study
the application of Ho Chi Minh’s Thought in the education of patriotism to young
people. This is a significant issue and a new research direction to be exploited.
Chapter 1
APPLYING HO CHI MINH’S THOUGHT
IN THE WORK OF EDUCATING PATRIOTISM TO
VIETNAMESE YOUTH TODAY – SOME THEORETICAL ISSUES
1.1. SOME BASIC CONCEPTS
1.1.1. Concept of Ho Chi Minh’s patriotism and Ho Chi Minh’s Thought
on youth education
Ho Chi Minh’s patriotism is a close combination of Ho Chi Minh’s fervent
patriotic sentiment with a rigorous and profound system of reasoning, thought on
patriotism, is a part of modern Vietnamese patriotism, with the basic characteristics
which are uniting the national stance with the working class stance, attaching to the
ideal of national independence and socialism, maintainining a harmonious
combination of true patriotism and pure internationalism.
Ho Chi Minh’s Thought on cultivating the next revolutionary generation is Ho
Chi Minh’s perspective on significance, contents, methods, forms of educating and
fostering the young generation.
1.1.2. Concept of Vietnamese youth and application of Ho Chi Minh’s
Thought in the work of educating patriotism to Vietnamese youth today
The Vietnamese youth are Vietnamese nationals, aged between 16 and 30.

The application of Ho Chi Minh’s Thought in the education of patriotism to
young people is to apply the values of Ho Chi Minh’s Thought to the systematic,
purposely educational activities of the Party and the State in order to form good
qualities for young people that are love, loyalty and a sense of service to the
Fatherland.
1.1.3. Concept of contents and methods of patriotism education for young
people associated with the application of Ho Chi Minh’s Thought
The contents of educating patriotism to young people on the basis of applying
Ho Chi Minh’s Thought are for young people, determined on the characteristics of
Ho Chi Minh’s patriotism and educational contents for young people in Ho Chi
Minh’s Thought, of which are firmly defending the independence, sovereignty, unity
and territorial integrity of the Fatherland; keeping faithful to the revolutionary ideals
of the Party; striving to learn, working hard and respecting the law; pioneering in
the revolutionary action movement.
The methods of patriotism education for young people associated with the
application of Ho Chi Minh’s Thought are methods and forms of youth education in
Ho Chi Minh’s Thought.
1.2. HO CHI MINH’S PATRIOTISM, HO CHI MINH’S THOUGHT ON
YOUTH EDUCATION AND APPLICATION TO DEFINING CONTENTS
AND METHODS OF PATRIOTISM EDUCATION FOR VIETNAMESE
YOUTH TODAY

Ho Chi Minh’s patriotism is a part of modern Vietnamese patriotism, having
the following basic characteristics.
- Ethnic stance is united with working class stance
- National independence is associated with socialism
- Patriotism is combined with proletarian internationalism

* Following Ho Chi Minh, young people are the “mainstay” of the country, are
the owners of the country. Therefore, educating young people to become “both
talented and virtuous” is really important and essential.

- Revolutionary morality and revolutionary spirit
- Spirit of loving labor, loving science and respecting discipline
- Solidarity
- Health and aesthetic education
- Pioneering spirit in all action and caring, mentoring, and educating children
* For educational methods and forms:
Firstly, combining learning and practice, theory and practice
Secondly, understanding youth, paying attention to the psychological
characteristics and personality of youth, considering youth education as a work of
science
Thirdly, combining family, school and society for youth education
Fourthly, gathering young people in the Youth Union’s organization to educate
Fifthly, combining education and youth’s self-education
Sixthly, setting examples, “modeling” for young people to learn and follow

1.3. NECESSITY OF APPLYING HO CHI MINH’S THOUGHT IN THE
WORK OF EDUCATING PATRIOTISM TO VIETNAMESE YOUTH TODAY
1.3.1. Importance of patriotism education for young people associated with
the application of Ho Chi Minh’s Thought
The patriotism education for Vietnamese youth associated with the application
of Ho Chi Minh’s Thought in the new period is to arouse and promote the spirit and
energy, wisdom and talent of the young generation for the purpose of concentrating
on developing the economy and building the country more and more prosperously,
firmly protecting the Fatherland and the revolutionary achievements, maintaining the
socialist orientation, protecting and preserving the national cultural identity,
enhancing Vietnam’s reputation and position in the international area.
1.3.2. Significance of learning and following Ho Chi Minh’s Thought for
Vietnamese youth today
It helps young people realize their responsibilities for the country, humanity
and goal of freeing people, with the concept of happiness, with the meaning of life,
having a real scientific dialectical method and a way to recognize the world and the
era in the context of the world with many complex phenomena, recognizing the
future of humanity is the way that young people will come.
1.3.3. Demand for innovating patriotism education for Vietnamese youth
associated with the application of Ho Chi Minh’s Thought
The work of educating patriotism to young people asscociated with the
application of Ho Chi Minh’s Thought from perspective, awareness to content,
method and form should be practical, effective and suitable for young people; making
them correctly and deeply aware of the value of Ho Chi Minh’s Thought, thereby
appreciating the national independence, freedom and the path chosen by our Party,
Ho Chi Minh and people.

1.3.4. Requirements of the struggle in the field of ideology and culture
The work of educating patriotism to young people associated with the
application of Ho Chi Minh’s Thought is a part of ideological work to protect Ho Chi
Minh’s Thought and contribute to developing a class of young people who are rich in
patriotism, having deep faith in the Party, having enough courage and ability to
protect proletairan ideology, protect the Communist Party and protect the socialist
regime.

Chapter 2
APPLYING HO CHI MINH’S THOUGHT
IN THE WORK OF EDUCATING PATRIOTISM TO VIETNAMESE YOUTH
TODAY – REALITY AND THE QUESTIONS POSED
2.1. FACTORS AFFECTING THE APPLICATION OF HO CHI MINH’S
THOUGHT IN THE WORK OF EDUCATING PATRIOTISM TO VIETNAMESE
YOUTH TODAY
2.1.1. The interest of the Party and the State to young people and youth
education
Over the past years, the Party and the State have paid special attention to
young people and youth work. The interest of the Party and the State is of leadership
and management subjects to young people and youth work. This factor is a favorable
condition for the application of Ho Chi Minh’s Thought in the education of patriotism
for young people, facilitating maximum for young people to learn, work, dedicate
and become a national construction and defense force and worthy successors to the
revolutionary cause of our Party and people.
2.1.2. Characteristics and situation of Vietnamese youth today
- Young people are the age that reaches the most fullness of life. They are rich
in energy, dreams and ambitions. Nevertheless, due to uneven psychological
development rules, different living conditions and education, not every young people

develop themselves at an optimal level. At this stage, the dominance of the worldview
and outlook on life for youth activities is clearly expressed. These young people who
have perception in the right way on the development of the natural world, society and

people in urban areas, increasing the yearly working time of the rural youth,
restructuring the industry, labor structure, etc are still urgent issues that should be

- Physical and mental health is better cared for, however, due to the
psychological pressure on young people, the proportion of those who are suffering from
mental problems such as stress, depresson, autism and neuropathy tends to rise.

part of young people will not resist the temptation of money, affected by pragmatic
lifestyles, less interested in political and social issues, prone to mistakes moral,

With the achievements of the innovation in the country, young people are
living in a more favorable economic, cultural and social environment and having
many opportunities for education, development and innovation. Nevertheless, the
limitations of the economic, cultural and social reforms are also obstacles to the

Globalization and international integration have made economic integration,
cultural exchange between countries really exciting. This is a favorable factor for the

integration, however, young people also face with many temptations, if we do not

The strong development of high-speed information technology has profoundly
impacted all areas of social life, increasing the amount of information many times,

effect in a positive way is still limited, especially today young people are being
bogged down in it and lost themselves. Some of them use information technology too
much time, it seems that it takes up all the time to rest and study. If the use is not

patriotism to their children. Schools have followed their achievements, attaching
importance to “teaching literacy” rather than “teaching people”, disregarding the

A part of the youth for political, social, historical and cultural isses have been
limited in awareness level, superficial living capity and understanding of many areas

CONCLUSION
1. Ho Chi Minh’s Thought in general and Ho Chi Minh’s patriotism, Ho Chi
Minh’s Thought on youth education in particular are a system of thoughts with
profound scientific and practical values. That system was formed from the reception
of cultural values of national traditions, the cultural elite of humanity, especially
Marxism-Leninism, elements of Ho Chi Minh's subjective qualities, and adjusted,
guided by his own experiences in the process of spreading Marxism-Leninism, from

the training of revolutionary youths through generations. Ho Chi Minh's patriotism,
Ho Chi Minh's Thought on youth education covers many aspects, of which notably
those are the characteristiccs of Ho Chi Minh’s patriotism, the content and method of
youth education, the rationale for educating and cultivating the youth through the
periods. In association with the goal of youth work and building new Vietnamese
people today, from the the current quality of patriotism education for the young
generation in Vietnam today, enhancing the application of Ho Chi Minh’s Thought is
an urgent task in both theoretical and practical aspects.
In every revolutionary period, young people are always a pioneering force, an
effective arm, a beloved team of our Party, revolution and people. Patriotism for
young people acts as an indispensable characteristic, a goal, a great motivation to
inspire young people to overcome all difficulties to rise forward. If lacking
patriotism, it is easy for young people to fall into a pragmatic, selfish way of life and
also be easily exploited by others for evil purposes, against the interests of the people
and the country. Promoting the education of patriotism for young people associated
with the application of Ho Chi Minh’s Thought is an urgent task in both theoretical
and practical aspects, in order to form a class of elite young people who are stable in
political stance, steadfast in the socialist path, rich in patriotism, with great ideals,
with great ambitions to contribute to the whole Party, the whole army and all our
people for the purpose of successfully achieving the goal of rich people, strong
country, democratic, fair and civilized society.
2. Over the past years, with the attention of the Party, the State, departments,
unions, families, schools and society, the education of patriotism for young people
have obtained encouraging results. Thus, it has contributed to the formation of valuable
qualities of patriotism in most young people. As a result, the majority of young people
have patriotism, trust in the Party's leadership, in the victory of the cause of building
socialism, love the people, actively foster revolutionary ideals, cultivate revolutionary
morality, train cultural lifestyles, care about the destiny of the country, be willing to
accept difficult tasks, passionate about learning, work hard, respect discipline, have a
sense of solidarity, etc. Nevertheless, this work still has many shortcomings and

limitations. That is, the program and the content of education are slowly innovated, not
associated with reality, nor really suitable for young people; basic education is
integrated in other activities, educational methods are monotonous, dry, unattractive;
material conditions for education are backward and poor; the quality and capacity of
some teachers, lecturers, reporters, propagandists, politicians, Union officials, and
those who directly work on the education of patriotism for the younger generation are
limited. These shortcomings resulting in the education of patriotism for young people
have not yet achieved as our expectations and desires. Therefore, studying, properly
appreciating the actual situation, pointing out the causes, recognizing the questions
posed by the reality and seeking solutions to promote achievements and overcome
limitations are really urgent requirements in this work.
The above application of Ho Chi Minh’s Thought in the patriotism education
for young people is both a science and an art, is a difficult, complicated and longterm task, especially in the current situation that should have the same strength and
responsibility of the whole political system. Therefore, it is necessary to adhere to
appropriate views and solutions to fully impact all stages and processes to enhance
this work. The desire of the Party, the State and all of our people is to build a strong,
democratic and civilized Vietnam in the coming time whether or not it will become a
reality depending largely on what we prepare for the young generation today,
including the application of Ho Chi Minh's Thought on educating patriotism to young
people.
3. After summarizing 30 years of innovation, our Party draws some lessons, of
which the number one is to be active and non-stop creative based on the steadfast
goal of national independence and socialism, creatively applying and developing
Marxism-Leninism and Ho Chi Minh's Thought into Vietnamese revolutionary
practice. Thus, the application of Ho Chi Minh's Thought in the work of educating
patriotism to Vietnamese youth plays a significant role, is a current urgent
requirement to create a class of young people who are "both talented and virtuous",
having a strong political spirit, keeping faithful to the goal of national independence
and socialism, having the will to rise up to establish themselves and establish a

career, having desires to enrich themselves legally, to win poorly, backward,
voluntarily, emulating to participate in the socio-economic development, actively
contributing to the cause of building and protecting the Socialist Vietnamese
Fatherland.
Innovating and improving the quality of patriotism education for young people
following the direction of promoting the application of Ho Chi Minh’s Thought
would contribute to improving the quality of youth education and youth work,
arousing patriotism, self-respect, national pride in every young man - the future
owners of the country, creating a generation of “talented and virtuous” young people
who would successfully implement and protect the Socialist Vietnamese Fatherland
in the current period.
