Ever since humans have inhabited the earth, they have made use of various forms of communication.
Generally, this expression of thoughts and feelings has been in the form of oral speech. When there is a
language barrier, communication is accomplished through sign language in which motions stand for letters,
words, and ideas. Tourists, the deaf and the mute have had to resort to this form of expression. Many of these
symbols of the whole words are very picturesque and exact and can be used internationally; spelling,
however, cannot. Body language transmits ideas or thoughts by certain actions, either intentionally or
unintentionally. A wink can be a way of flirting or indicating that the party is only joking. A nod signifies
(biểu thị) approval, while shaking the head indicates a negative reaction. Other forms of nonlinguistic
language can be found in Braille (a system of raised dots read with the fingertips), signal flags. Morse code
(mã Mooc-xơ), and smoke signals. Road maps and picture signs also guide, warn, and instruct people. While
verbalization is the most common form of language, other systems and techniques also express human
thoughts and feelings.

It is very important to have healthy teeth. Good teeth help us to chew our food. They also help us to
look nice. How does a tooth go bad? The decay begins in a little crack in the enamel (men răng) covering of
the tooth. This happens after germs and bits of food have collected there then the decay slowly spreads inside
the tooth. Eventually, poison goes into the blood, and we may feel quite ill. How can we keep our teeth
healthy? Firstly, we ought to visit our dentist twice a year. He can fill the small holes in our teeth before they
destroy the teeth. He can examine our teeth to check that they are growing in the right way. Unfortunately,
many people wait until they have toothache before they see a dentist. Secondly, we should brush our teeth
with a toothbrush and fluoride toothpaste at least twice a day-once after breakfast and once before we go to
bed. We can also use wooden toothpicks to clean between our teeth after a meal. Thirdly, we should eat food
that is good for our teeth and our body: milk, cheese, fish, brown bread, potatoes, red rice, raw vegetables
and fresh fruit. Chocolate, sweets, biscuits and cakes are bad, especially when we eat them between meals.
They are harmful because they stick to our teeth and cause decay.

The coffee plant is actually a large shrub (bụi), or bush, not really a tree. It can grow very tall (from
three to nine meters) if it is left alone in the wild. It has dark green leaves on the outside and lighter green
leaves underneath. Small white blossoms appear on the leaves, making the coffee plant look like it’s covered
with snow. After a few days, the Fragrant blossoms (hoa thơm) fall off the plant, and small berries begin to
grow. The berries change from green to dark red in about six months. Underneath the berry skin there is a
green bean. When the berries are ripe, they are picked, and the bean inside is removed. This is the bean that
produces coffee. Coffee beans are picked by hand, one by one. Then they are dried and prepared for market.
Coffee beans are shipped all over the world. When they reach their destination, different coffee beans are
blended together to produce different kinds of coffee. Then the beans are roasted, ground and packaged in
air-tight cans and bags to keep the coffee fresh. Different countries prefer different blends (pha trộn). In
Turkey and Arabia, dark coffee is preferred. In the United States and Canada, the coffee is not so dark.

The agricultural revolution in the nineteenth century involved two things: the invention of labor –
saving machinery and the development of scientific agriculture. Labor – saving machinery naturally
appeared first where labor was scarce. “In Europe,” said Thomas Jefferson, “the object is to make the most of
their land, labor being abundant; here it is to make the most of our labor, land being abundant. “it was in
America, therefore, that the great advances in nineteen-century agricultural machinery first came. At the
opening of the century, with the exception of a crude plow, farmers could have carried practically all of the
existing agricultural implements on their backs; by 1860, most of the machinery in use today had been
design in an early form. The most important of the early inventions was the iron plow. As early as 1790
Charles New bold of New Jersey had been working on the idea of a cast-iron plow and spent his entire
fortune in introducing his invention. The farmers however, would have none of it, claiming that the iron
poisoned the soil and made the weeds grow. Nevertheless, many people devoted their, attention to the plow,
until in 1869 James Oliver of South Bend, Indiana, turned out the first chilled-steel plow

Today’s cars are smaller, safer, cleaner, and more economical than their predecessors(tiền nhân), but
the car of the future will be far more pollution-free than those on the road today. Several new types of
automobile engines have already been developed than run on alternative sources of power, such as electricity,
compressed natural gas, methanol, steam, hydrogen, and propane. Electricity, however, is the only zeroemission (emit –v- nhả, thải) option presently available. Although electric vehicles will not be truly practical
until a powerful, compact battery or other dependable source of current is available, transport experts foresee
a new assortment (phân hạng) of electric vehicles entering everyday life: shorter-range commuter electric
cars, three-wheeled neighborhood cars, electric delivery vans, bikes and trolleys. As automakers work to
develop practical electrical vehicles, urban planners and utility engineers are focusing on infrastructure
systems to support and make the best use of the new cars. Public charging facilities will need to be as
common as today’s gas stations. Public parking spots on the street or in commercial lots will need to be
equipped with devices that allow drivers to charge their batteries while they stop, dine, or attend a concert.
To encourage the use of electric vehicles, the most convenient parking in transportation centers might be
reserved for electric cars. Planners foresee electric shuttle buses, trains, buses and neighborhood vehicles all
meeting at transit centers that would have facilities for charging and renting. Commuters will be able to rent
a variety of electric cars to suit their needs: light trucks, one-person three-wheelers, small cars, or
electric/gasoline hybrid cars for longer trips, which will no doubt take place on automated freeways capable
of handling five times the number of vehicles that can be carried by freeway today.

C. planes
D. trolleys(xe đẩy)

A pilot cannot fly by sight alone. In many conditions, such as flying at night and landing in dense
fog, a pilot must use radar, an alternative way of navigating (định vị). Since human eyes are not very good at
determining speeds of approaching objects, radar can show a pilot how fast nearby planes are moving. The
basic principle of radar is exemplified (minh họa) by what happens when one shouts in a cave. The echo of
the sounds against the walls helps a person determine the size of the cave. With radar, however, the waves
are radio waves instead of sound waves. Radio waves travel at the speed of light, about 300,000 kilometers
in one second. A radar set sends out a short burst of radio waves. Then it receives the echoes produced when
the waves bounce off objects. By determining the time it takes for the echoes to return to the radar set, a
trained technician can determine the distance between the radar set and other objects. The word “radar”, in
fact, gets its name from the term “radio detection and ranging”. Ranging” is the term for detection of the
distance between an object and the radar set. Besides being of critical importance to pilots, radar is essential
for air traffic control, tracking ships at sea, and for tracking weather systems and storms.

Smallpox (đậu mùa) was the first widespread disease to be eliminated by human intervention (can
thiệp). In May, 1966, the World Health Organization (WHO), an agency of the United Nations was
authorized to initiate a global campaign to eradicate smallpox. The goal was to eliminate the disease in one
decade. At the time, the disease posed a serious threat to people in more than thirty nations. Because similar
projects for malaria and yellow fever had failed, few believed that smallpox could actually be eradicated but
eleven years after the initial organization of the campaign, no cases were reported in the field. The strategy
was not only to provide mass vaccinations but also to isolate patients with active smallpox in order to contain
the spread of the disease and to break the chain of human transmission. Rewards for reporting smallpox
assisted in motivating removed from contact with others and treated. At the same time, the entire village
where the victim had lived was vaccinated. By April of 1978 WHO officials announced that they had isolated
the last known case of the disease but health workers continued to search for new cases for additional years
to be completely sure. In May, 1980, a formal statement was made to the global community. Today smallpox
is no longer a threat to humanity. Routine vaccinations have been stopped worldwide.

had achieved the greatest benefit to humanity in a particular year. Originally, there were six classifications
for outstanding (nổi bật) contributions designated (ghi rõ) in Nobel’s will, including chemistry, physics,
physiology or medicine, literature and international peace. The prizes are administered by the Nobel
Foundation in Stockholm. In 1969, a prize for economics endowed by the Central Bank of Sweden was
added. Candidates for the prizes must be nominated in writing a qualified authority in the filed of
competition. Recipients in physics, chemistry, and economics are selected by the Royal Swedish Academy of
Sciences; and physiology or medicine by the Caroline Institute (viện Sac-lơ); in literature by the Swedish
Academy; and in peace by the Norwegian Nobel Committee appointed by Norway’s parliament. The prizes
are usually in Stockholm on December 10, with the King of Sweden officiating (thực thi), an appropriate
tribute Alfred Nobel on the anniversary of his death. Each one includes a gold medal, a diploma, and a cash
award of about one million dollars.

Drugs are one of the (61- medical) profession’s most valuable tools. Doctors prescribe drugs to (62treat) or prevent many diseases. Every year, penicillin and other (63- germ-killing) drugs save the lives of
countless victims of pneumonia and other dangerous infectious diseases. Vaccines prevent attacks by such
diseases as (64- measles), polio (viêm tủy), and smallpox (đậu mùa). The use of these and many other drugs
(65- has) helped millions of people live longer, healthier lives than would (66- otherwise) have been
possible. Almost all our most important drugs, however, were unknown before the 1900’s. For example, the
sulfa drugs and antibiotics did not come into use (67- until) the late 1930’s and early 1940’s. Before that
time, about 25 percent of all pneumonia victims in the United States died of the disease. The new drugs
quickly reduced the (68- death) rate from pneumonia to less than 5 percent. Polio vaccine was introduced in
1955. At that time, polio struck about 30,000 to 50,000 Americans each year. (69- By) 1960, the use of the
vaccine has reduced the number of new polio cases to about 3,000 a year. In 1900, most Americans did not
live (70- past) the age of 47. Today, Americans live an average of more than 70 years, in great part because
of the use of modern drugs.

Ever since humans have inhabited the earth, they have made (71- use) of various forms of
communication. Generally, this expression of thoughts and feelings has been in the form of oral (72- speech).
When there is a language (73- barrier), communication is accomplished through sign language in which
motions (74- stand) for letters, words, and ideas. Tourists, the deaf, and the mute have had to (75- resort) to
this form of expression. Many of these symbols of whole words are very picturesque and exact and can be
used internationally; spelling, however, cannot. Body language (76- transmits) ideas or thoughts by certain
actions, either intentionally or unintentionally. A wink can be a way of flirting or indicating that the party is
only joking. A nod (77- signifies) approval, while shaking the head (78- indicates) a negative reaction. Other
forms of nonlinguistic language can be (79- found) in Braille (a system of raised dots read with the
fingertips), signal flags, Morse code, and smoke signals. Road maps and picture signs also guide, warn, and
