IV. READING COMPREHENSION
A. Read the passage carefully and choose the correct answer.
Pollution can take two major forms: local pollution and global pollution. In the past, only local
pollution was thought to be a problem. For example, coal burning produces smoke, which in
sufficient concentrations can be a health hazard. One slogan, taught in schools, was "The solution
to pollution is dilution." The theory was that sufficiently diluted pollution could cause no damage. In
recent decades, awareness has been rising that some forms of pollution pose a global problem.
Human activity, primarily nuclear testing, has significantly raised the levels of background radiation,
which leads to human health problems, all over the 'world. Awareness of both 'kinds of pollution,
among other things, has led to the environmental movement, which seeks to limit the human
impact on the environment

Almost every language in the world has dialects and American English is no exception. At the
present time there is an interesting study which is on American speech habits. This study has
shown that different words are frequently used in different parts of the country to denote the same
thing. For example, in the east, Americans use the word "soda" to denote a soft drink. In some
parts of the west, a soft drink is "tonic". Such differences are usually a source of conversation and
sometimes misunderstanding happens.
Speech and life all over the world have often changed. New words are being used when new
discoveries are made and new concepts are formed. Usage determines what is correct and what is
incorrect. Fifty years ago, it was incorrect to say "It's me." But today it is acceptable simply
because most Americans say that instead of "It's I." People change, so language changes. What is
wrong today may be right tomorrow.
