I. Form
1. Form :

♦ Affirmative: Ex: You are cutting the plate .
→ Subject + am/ is/ are + V-ing
♦ Negative:

Ex: You are not cutting the meat.

→ Subject + am/ is/ are + not + V-ing

♦ Question:

Ex: Are you cutting the meat?
No, I’m not / Yes,I am
→ Am/ Is/ Are + Subject + V-ing ?
No, Subject + am/are/is + not
Yes, Subject + am/are/is

*Note: Question words: What/Which/Where/How…
Ex: What are you doing now?

Just add -ing to the base verb:

If the base verb ends in consonant + stressed vowel + consonant,
double the last letter:

If the base verb ends in ie, change the ie to y:

*Note: We don’t use this tense with the following verbs: be, see, hear, understand,
know, like , want , glance, feel, think, smell, love. hate, realize, seem, remmber,

II. Uses
 To describe an action

that is going on at this
moment.
Ex: You are using the Internet.
 To describe an action

that is going on during
this period of time
or a trend.
Ex: Are you still working for the same company?

 To describe an action or

event in the future, which
has already been planned
or prepared.
Ex: We're going on holiday tomorrow.
 With "always, forever,

constantly" to describe
and emphasise a continuing
series of repeated actions.
Ex: Harry and Sally are always arguing!

 To describe a temporary event or situation

Ex: He usually plays the drums, but he's playing bass
guitar tonight.
 To describe a changing or developing situations

Ex: Jackson is getting taller and taller.


III. Adverbs of time/ Time expressions
 Now

Ex: Nam is playing game now .
 Right now

Ex: My father is reading newspaper right now.
 At the moment

Ex: My mom is cooking at the moment.
 At present

Ex: They aren’t watching the TV at present.
 Be careful!

Ex: Be careful! You are driving so fast.




Keep silent!
Ex: Keep silent! The baby is sleeping.

 Listen!
Ex: Listen! She is crying.
 Look!
Ex: Look! The train is coming.
