We find that bright children are rarely held back by mixed-ability teaching. On the contrary, both their knowledge
and experience are enriched. We feel that there are many disadvantages in streaming pupils. It does not take into
account the fact that children develop at different rates. It can have a bad effect on both the bright and the not-sobright child. After all, it can be quite discouraging to be at the bottom of the top grade!
Besides, it is rather unreal to grade people just according to their intellectual ability. This is only one aspect of
their total personality. We are concerned to develop the abilities of all our pupils to the full, not just their
academic ability. We also value personal qualities and social skills, and we find that mixed-ability teaching
contributes to all these aspects of learning.
In our classroom, we work in various ways. The pupils often work in groups; this gives them the opportunity to
learn to co-operate, to share, and to develop leadership skills. They also learn how to cope with the personal
problems as well as learning how to think, to make decisions, to analyze and evaluate, to communicate effectively.
The pupils learn from each other as well as from the teachers.
Sometimes the pupils work in pairs; sometimes the work on individual tasks and assignments, they can do this at
their own speed. They also have some formal class teaching when this is appropriate. We encourage our pupils to
use the library, and we teach them the skills they need in order to do this effectively. An advanced pupil can do
advanced works; it does not matter what age the child is. We expect our pupils to do their best, not their least, and
we give them every encouragement to attain this goal.

Long before they can actually speak, babies pay special attention to the speech they hear around them. Within the
first month of their lives, babies' responses to the sound of the human voice will be different from their responses
to other sorts of auditory stimuli. They will stop crying when they hear a person talking, but not if they hear a
bell or the sound of a rattle. At first, the sounds that an infant notices might be only those words that receive the
heaviest emphasis and that often occur at the ends of utterances. By the time they are six or seven weeks old,

differences in adult stress and intonation can influence babies' emotional states and behavior. Long before they

Adults make it as easy as they can for babies to pick up a language by exaggerating such cues. One researcher
observed babies and their mothers in six diverse cultures and found that, in all six languages, the mothers used
simplified syntax, short utterances and nonsense sounds, and transformed certain sounds into baby talk. Other
investigators have noted that when mothers talk to babies who are only a few months old, they exaggerate the

pitch, loudness, and intensity of their words. They also exaggerate their facial expressions, hold vowels longer,
and emphasize certain words.
More significant for language development than their response to general intonation is observation that tiny
babies can make relatively fine distinctions between speech sounds. In other words, babies enter the world with
the ability to make precisely those perceptual discriminations that are necessary if they are to acquire aural
language.
Babies obviously derive pleasure from sound input, too: even as young as nine months they will listen to songs or
stories, although the words themselves are beyond their understanding. For babies, language is a sensory-motor
delight rather than the route to prosaic meaning that it often is for adults.

Learning means acquiring knowledge or developing the ability to perform new behaviors. It is common to
think of learning as something that takes place in school, but much of human learning occurs outside the
classroom, and people continue to learn throughout their lives.
Even before they enter school, young children learn to walk, to talk, and to use their hands to manipulate
toys, food, and other objects. They use all of their senses to learn about the sights, sounds, tastes, and smells in
their environments. They learn how to interact with their parents, siblings, friends, and other people important to

Because learning continues throughout our lives and affects almost everything we do, the study of
learning is important in many different fields. Teachers need to understand the best ways to educate children.
Psychologists, social workers, criminologists, and other human-service workers need to understand how certain
experiences change people’s behaviors. Employers, politicians, and advertisers make use of the principles of
learning to influence the behavior of workers, voters, and consumers.
Learning is closely related to memory, which is the storage of information in the brain. Psychologists who
study memory are interested in how the brain stores knowledge, where this storage takes place, and how the brain
later retrieves knowledge when we need it. In contrast, psychologists who study learning are more interested in
behavior and how behavior changes as a result of a person’s experiences.
There are many forms of learning, ranging from simple to complex. Simple forms of learning involve a
single stimulus. A stimulus is anything perceptible to the senses, such as a sight, sound, smell, touch, or taste. In a
form of learning known as classical conditioning, people learn to associate two stimuli that occur in sequence,
such as lightning followed by thunder. In operant conditioning, people learn by forming an association between a
behavior and its consequences (reward or punishment). People and animals can also learn by observation - that is,
by watching others perform behaviors. More complex forms of learning include learning languages, concepts, and
motor skills.

Culture is a word in common use with complex meanings, and is derived, like the term broadcasting,
from the treatment and care of the soil and of what grows on it. It is directly related to cultivation and the
adjectives cultural and cultured are part of the same verbal complex. A person of culture has identifiable
attributes, among them a knowledge of and interest in the arts, literature, and music. Yet the word culture does
not refer solely to such knowledge and interest nor, indeed, to education. At least from the 19th century onwards,
under the influence of anthropologists and sociologists, the word culture has come to be used generally both in
the singular and the plural (cultures) to refer to a whole way of life of people, including their customs, laws,
conventions, and values.
Distinctions have consequently been drawn between primitive and advanced culture and cultures, between
elite and popular culture, between popular and mass culture, and most recently between national and global

culture or agriculture, from the soil, but from the city. The two words are sometimes treated as synonymous. Yet
this is misleading. While civilization and barbarism are pitted against each other in what seems to be a perpetual
behavioural pattern, the use of the word culture has been strongly influenced by conceptions of evolution in the
19th century and of development in the 20th century. Cultures evolve or develop. They are not static. They have

twists and turns. Styles change. So do fashions. There are cultural processes. What, for example, the word
cultured means has changed substantially since the study of classical (that is, Greek and Roman) literature,
philosophy, and history ceased in the 20th century to be central to school and university education. No single
alternative focus emerged, although with computers has come electronic culture, affecting kinds of study, and
most recently digital culture. As cultures express themselves in new forms not everything gets better or more
civilized.
The multiplicity of meanings attached to the word made and will make it difficult to define. There is no
single, unproblematic definition, although many attempts have been made to establish one. The only nonproblematic definitions go back to agricultural meaning (for example, cereal culture or strawberry culture) and
medical meaning (for example, bacterial culture or penicillin culture). Since in anthropology and sociology we
also acknowledge culture clashes, culture shock, and counter-culture, the range of reference is extremely wide.
